ESFL Book Spotlight series
I started the Book Spotlight series as a way to tie ESFL's collection into library programming and current events.
BOOK SPOTLIGHT: On Palestinian struggle 🇵🇸 (7 slides) With the ongoing Palestinian genocide, ESFL has compiled a list of books, online readings, and relevant organizational resources, to help support community learning. Our intention is to provide historical context around Palestinian struggle, offering a more nuanced look at what has variously been called the “Israeli-Palestinian Conflict” or the “Arab/Israeli Conflict.” These texts hone in on the specifics of Israeli settler colonialism, Palestinian indigeneity, Israeli apartheid, Zionism, Hamas, the US-Israel-Palestine relationship, and more. These five texts, along with eight others, are featured at ESFL as a part of our current Palestine Resource book display. We invite community members to come and check them out! All 13 books are highlighted alongside a curated list of online readings and organizational resources on our website at link in bio, or bit.ly/esfl-palestine. -- BOOKS: 1) The Hundred Years' War on Palestine, by Rashid Khalidi 2) The Question of Palestine, by Edward Saïd 3) The Fateful Triangle, by Noam Chomsky 4) Palestinian Society: A Survey of Living Conditions, Eds. BOOK SPOTLIGHT: On Marx and Capitalism (swipe for surprise 😙)
In spirit, Labor Day is a day of honoring workers and laborers. At the same time, declaring a national holiday often means little when it comes to enacting structural change. Over 140 years after the first national Labor Day was instated, workers continue to battle the capitalist systems that exploit them. The following are four books in ESFL’s collection that help unpack these systems and, in some cases, provide possible solutions. This particular selection focuses on Marxism and anti-capitalism. These and many related books can be accessed in-person at the library, by emailing [email protected]. In the meantime, join us this coming Sat 9/9, 5-8pm, for our annual Labor Day Picnic! The struggle is long, and it is important we feed our bellies and spirits alike! -- BOOKS: 1) How to be an Anti-capitalist in the 21st Century, by Erik Olin Wright 2) Marx’s Capital Illustrated, written by David Smith, illustrated by Phil Evans 3) Marx, Capital, and the Madness of Economic Reason, by David Harvey 4) The Religion of Capital: A satirical exposure of capital’s claims to sanctity, by Paul Lafargue |
